Age of the artistic representations: Late Neolithic / Copper Age. The proposed dates range from 7,000 to 4,000 years ago.
General description of the destination: To reach the Abrigos de los Canchos de las Sábanas, take the road from Solana to Berzocana (CC-22.4), about 2 km from the latter village. The route begins on the track leading to the Sierra estate and heads eastwards until it reaches the rugged quartzite cliffs, known locally as ‘canchos’. On these cliffs, you will find small cavities formed between the quartzite strata, some of which feature prehistoric rock paintings made with red ochre pigment. It is a short route, but it involves some fairly steep gradients along paths with loose stones. The first section, up to the rural guesthouse on the La Sierra estate, follows a dirt track in good condition. From this holiday cottage, the path becomes steeper and soon takes a trail leading to the first rock shelter, that of Cancho de Las Sábanas, which lies hidden at the base of the quartzite outcrop of the same name. From here, returning to the path that starts at the holiday cottage, you climb another track to the rock shelters of Los Morales and Los Cabritos, both barely 50 metres apart. These three rock shelters, together with that of Risquillo de Paulino, some 5 km south of Berzocana, make up the collection of cave paintings in this municipality.
Museographic resources description: In the rock shelters, we find small schematic figures painted with linear strokes of red ochre, depicting anthropomorphic figures, possible stylised representations of animals, and symbols.
