Natural Environment:

An inland Mediterranean landscape of ravines, dry streambeds, cliffs and limestone formations. The rock shelters are located in rocky walls and natural cavities, integrated into a landscape of great environmental and cultural value. The area also preserves traditional rural buildings and other elements of its historical heritage.

Archaeological evidences in the site:

The inland highlands of northern Castellón are home to a significant group of rock art sites. Notably, La Valltorta contains 96 sites; the majority can be attributed to the Levantine style, although some examples of the Schematic style have also been documented.

Opening Times:

Cova dels Mas d’en Josep: The tour departs from the Museum of Valltorta at 10:00 a.m. and is of moderate difficulty.
Cova dels Cavalls: Tours depart from the museum at 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. The route is of low difficulty.
Coves dels Ribassals or Cova del Civil: Tours depart from the museum at 4:30 p.m. from October to April and at 6:00 p.m. from May to September. This is considered an easy route.
Centelles Rock Shelter: This tour lasts 3 hours and is organised only once a month, so you will need to check with the La Valltorta Museum. It is considered to be of medium difficulty.

Virtually all of the paintings belong to the so-called Levantine Art, dating from approximately 8,000 to 5,000 years ago.

General description of the destination:

The La Valltorta-Gasulla Cultural Park is home to 96 rock art sites, some of which are of great archaeological interest and can also be visited directly, such as the rock shelters at Mas d’en Josep, Cingle I and Cingle II, the Cova dels Cavalls, the Coves del Ribassals or Coves del Civil, as well as the rock shelter at Centelles (the latter being in the town of Albocàsser).

History of the site:

La Valltorta has been studied since the early XXth Century. Although the Spanish Civil War halted the research, it was reignited during the 1960’s. The posterior efforts amounted to the establishing of a museum in 1994 and the inclusion of the decorated rock shelters on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as part of the inscription entitled ‘Rock Art of the Mediterranean Arc of the Iberian Peninsula (ARAMPI)’.

Museographic resources description:

Linked to the rock-shelter sites is the Valltorta Museum, the organisation responsible for managing these decorated rock-shelter sites and from where guided tours of them set off. The museum has a permanent exhibition featuring some rock art fragments recovered from the Cova dels Cavalls and the Cova del Civil, various tracings of the rock art panels from the rock-shelter sites, archaeological reconstructions and an excellent reproduction of the Cova dels Cavalls.
