Entorno Natural:

Deep isolated valleys are sheltered by the abrupt relief of Peña de Francia. The Batuecas Valley has steep sides and dense vegetation. It is located in the south of the Province of Salamanca.

Evidencias arqueológicas del sitio:

The Carmelite of the Desert Convent is situated at the start of the valley. Built as a retreat in the late 15th century, numerous hermitages are located inside and outside its lands. The hermitages on the hillsides around the convent are now mostly in ruins. Due to the lack of written documents about Las Batuecas until the late 18th century, and its location in one of the most isolated parts of Spain, numerous legends were born and narrated in literature and oral tradition.

Descripción general del destino:

The rock-shelters with Schematic art are located in the quartzite sides of the valley, along the course of the river. The following sites have been identified in Las Batuecas Valley: Canchal de las Cabras Pintadas, Canchal del Águila, Canchales de la Pizarra, Canchales del Zarzalón, Cueva del Cristo, Umbría del Canchal del Cristo, Canchales de Mahoma, Umbría de la Cotorrina, Majadilla de las Torres, Canchal de los Acerones, Corral de Morcilla, Covacho del Pallón, Risco del Ciervo, Canchal de Villita and Canchal de las Torres. Simple and uniform techniques were used for the paintings; generally colour-wash and lines. The colours are normally red and ochre, as well as black and yellow, and also white which is relatively frequent at Las Batuecas. The predominant signs are lines and dots. There are also anthropomorphs and zoomorphic figures, sometimes forming scenes with a clear naturalistic intention.

Descripción de los recursos museográficos:

The Archaeological Centre in La Alberca has two main areas. The first one is about the rock art and shows the time when it was produced, with scenes of the people and the painting techniques used in the rock-shelters, replicas of their tools and examples of the pigments. A model of the valley locates the decorated rock-shelters and there are audio-visual presentations. The second area is devoted to the Carmelite Convent.
