Natural Environment:

This destination is located high in the mountains, perched on the rocks, like guardians of the gorge. The elevations of Sierra Morena are a key geographical feature. They function as a border and as a gateway to Andalucía.Since prehistoric times, the narrow Despeñaperros pass has been a natural route for people and animals. Here you will find the Iberian sanctuary of Collado de los Jardines. In medieval times, Christian armies crossed it to fight the famous battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, descending to Santa Elena. Sierra Morena is a large fault that forms a step between the Baetic Depression and the Meseta. It does not exceed 1,000 meters, but its territorial importance is enormous. The Despeñaperros rock formation is made up of quartzites: hard, resistant, and bare. These rocks form vertical cliffs and slopes with rocks that emerge like pointed columns. Among them are the “Órganos de Despeñaperros” (Despeñaperros Organs), a gray rock formation reminiscent of the pipes of a musical organ. The yellow and orange lichens that grow on these rocks complete the visual spectacle. The vegetation consists of holm oaks, cork oaks, gall oaks, and oaks, especially in valleys and on slopes. There are also thickets of mastic, rockrose, and strawberry trees. There are also reforested areas of pine, cypress, and cedar trees. The current fauna includes reintroduced mountain goats, deer, and wild boars. They coexist with predators such as wolves and lynxes, as well as birds of prey such as imperial eagles and griffon vultures.
