Natural Environment:
Penascosa is located on a long river beach on the right bank of the Côa River, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, in the parishes of Castelo Melhor and Almendra. The visit begins at the Visitor Center in the town of Castelo Melhor. The tour continues in an off-road vehicle with a guide along a dirt road through fields of almond and olive trees, for approximately 6 km.
Archaeological evidences in the site:
The permanent exhibition, which is fully interactive and technologically advanced, takes us into the world of the artists who filled the rocky outcrops on the banks of the Côa River with representations of animals, signs, and anthropomorphic figures during much of prehistory, from the Upper Paleolithic (almost 30,000 years ago) to the end of the Iron Age and the beginning of the Romanization of the territory (and even in more recent phases). The recreation of the daily life of the people who populated the valley and their rock art (their techniques, styles, and themes) are the central themes of a modern museum that offers content for all types of audiences.
