Natural Environment:

The mountain ranges of La Virgen and Cordoneros are no very high mountains composed of quartzites and covered by Mediterranean vegetation. They have a wide view over the great planes of La Mancha region where an extensive agriculture has been developed since Prehistoric times.


Archaeological evidences in the site:

The mountain ranges of La Mancha region (from Toledo Mountains to Albacete province, across the province of Ciudad Real) host a large number of rock-shelters with Schematic rock art. These decorates places are connected with open air settlements, where the first farmers and metallurgists of the region developed rich cultures, especially from the Chalcolithic to the end of the Bronze Age.

Chillón offers a rich cultural heritage, with several historic and traditional sites worth visiting. Highlights include the Parish Church of San Juan Bautista and Santo Domingo de Silos, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in the Monument category in 1991, and the Parish Museum, also known as the Treasure of Chillón. Visitors can also explore the Baroque Hermitage of Santo Cristo de la Caridad and the Hermitage of the Virgin of the Castle, located at an altitude of around 700 metres and offering impressive views, as well as the nearby prehistoric cave paintings. Other points of interest include the Ethnographic Museum, which offers a journey into the town’s past, and an ancient Roman road that once connected Mérida and Zaragoza, passing through the Roman city of Sisapo. Finally, the Route of the Fountains features a series of traditional springs, including Fuente de los Dos Chorros, La Garrota, El Bombo, Herrumbrosa, Fuentecita, Mantequilla, Pilarejos, Angorrilla, Fuente del Barco, Arraigán, Asperilla and Fuente del Puerto, offering a charming way to discover Chillón’s natural and cultural landscape.
