The Altamira Museum joins the select group of top rock art destinations and receives ERAH certification. The CARP Cultural Route, supported by the Council of Europe, awards the “European Rock Art Heritage” certification to rock art sites that meet the best practices established in its official manual.
This is the 7th European destination to receive this distinction, following the Siega Verde Archaeological Area (Salamanca), the Campo Lameiro Archaeological Park (Pontevedra), the Lascaux IV International Rock Art Centre, the Thot Park, the Pole d’Interpretation de la Préhistoire de les Eyzies de Tayac (France), and the Museu do Côa (Portugal).
This distinction consolidates Altamira’s value as a heritage and tourism resource, ensuring quality and sustainability within the rock art sites open to the public. Certified sites are registered in the official CARP Route registry and become benchmarks within the European Cultural Tourism offering.
The ERAH seal certifies best practices and excellence across 12 thematic areas, evaluating criteria ranging from the legal and physical protection of sites to visitor services, sustainability, and brand and public image management.
